Anal gland expression is one of the more nitty-gritty topics to explain. Our canine and feline companions both have two sacs that excrete a very smelly product that is generally emptied when they defecate. Sometimes the anal glands become infected or are unable to express in the normal manner, and that is where your veterinarian comes in. The veterinarian will manually express the anal glands and infuse them with an antibiotic if they are infected.

Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?

Manually expressing the anal glands at home may be a possibility if you have help to hold your pet still for the procedure. A veterinarian should demonstrate the procedure prior to you attempting it at home, and there are a few supplies that will need to be purchased.

If my dog scoots on the carpet, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?

If your pet is scooting on the carpet, the anal glands should be checked by a veterinarian to rule out impaction. If your veterinarian concludes that they are normal, then there may be another cause for the scooting behaviour.
